The number of 5 ⭐️ ratings and 1 ⭐️ ratings are very similar and are significantly higher than the rest.

Why this happened? I know Amazon is a tough place to work so the number of 1 ⭐️ makes sense somehow. However, does it also mean lots of Amazon employees still “really enjoy” working there despite the toxic culture? And from the data, it seems that you will either “really enjoy” working or “really hate” working at Amazon? Why so?

Its because Amazon (in general) is highly political and to navigate politics you need soft skills. Many engineers dont think soft skills matter (or refuse to) learn soft skills so it puts a lot of them into a disadvantage in this type of culture. They dont want to play the "game", which is ok in and of itself, but while the rest of us who do, most of us do enjoy it or it fits us, especially L6+ where things get even more political. If you want to just be heads down into your work, coding all day and to be left alone, this is not the place for you, where politics (inclusive of visibility and impact) reigns. There was a thread a couple days ago about positive experiences in Amazon and you can see the why the gap is apparent. But it shouldnt come as a surprise...the interviews are much more behavorial than not.

I’ve been feeling dissonance between resistance to “play the game” and doing impactful work (I see engineers that thrive in my org are the ones coming up with work beyond what’s directly assigned to them). I’d like to give what they do a try. Do you have any recommendations? Either for learning to do it or overcoming my reluctance.

@hhjsud - dont be shy, just go and "own" things. Be vocal, but also read the room. Also dont use being an introvert as an excuse. I am textbook introvert and this stuff I still do. Theres nothing blocking you to just poke around and brainstorm of ideas. For example - whats something you or a teammate had a hard time with (project related, process related, anything), that you wish was better/more efficient/whatever, and "own" it to make better. The willingness to take a stab at something even if it doesnt work out, shows you want to help others (again, impact and visibility) and improve or create *something* that isnt directly assigned to you. I mean why do you see someone get TT YoY and/or promoted even if they come up with something that may *seem* half baked to you? But in reality the effort involved even getting it to the half baked stage (remember things can be iterative) is way more visible and impactful than staying heads down and not wanting to be bothered outside of picking up jira tasks.

I don’t think this data is meaningless. Not for any important decision, just general knowledge. The number of responses from Amazon is more than 5k, it should tell us something. That’s why I’m asking this question to know what it is

5k vs 60k in engineering or 600k as reported by LinkedIn. Even without many other things to consider like blind bias towards piped culture, this is too small to make any tangible sense.

If people don't lie about 5-10% URA every perf cycle, this rating is even less representing "bigger" company at any stretch of the imagination.

It is more about active employees who reads blind and care enough to give review, that's all.

If you collect data for fun, get more sources and breakdowns per department. LinkedIn gives insight with premium, trial period us free. There could be more in places like glassdoor etc.

If you are trying to find reasons to work there - don’t. Instead go work.

Engineers / IC true reports of their experience versus the HR PR and Hiring Managers shill posts to try and sweeten the poison pill a little so that they can hire anyone to replace the last batch of attrition.
