Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Sep 4, 2019 14 Comments

I was asked this question during managerial interviews last week for a senior role at MSFT.
I answered that I would love to have my own business, have the experience of using multiple hats, facing customers day in and out. Everyone frowned at me like I was from a different planet. Anything wrong in wanting to be an entrepreneur? Should I just fake and give a canned answer on other opportunities? I didn't hear back from HM so far.

  • My man that answer was for yourself not for others, especially during an interview. You gotta play the game

Using multiple hats? Like a newspaper hat or a tin foil hat?

But seriously. You basically walked into an interview and told them you don't want to work there. What reaction did you expect?

    • I disagree.. but I take the feedback. In 5 years I want to own my business, I gave an honest and passionate answer. And that doesn't mean I wouldn't be fully committed to the role I applied for until that happens.

My man it is not about being honest and expecting the other person will appreciate that. For the other person, it is just about whether you are meeting their checklists or not

What kind of business do you want to open?

Yes, large corps frown upon entrepreneurial intent. Thereโ€™s no guarantee of your job. But it has to be taken like happily ever after every single day.

    Itโ€™s more like a marriage.
