DoorDash Team Choice

Dec 12, 2021 13 Comments

Received a ng offer for DoorDash (Seattle office) and I'm choosing a team right now... Would greatly appreciate any advice / anecdotes on choosing from these teams, based on anything (management/impact/growth/wlb/...).

Choices are: Drive, Dashmart, Storefront, New Verticals, Merchant, Marketplace, Logistics.
I heard good things about Drive (good wlb, mature product, nice team), Dashmart (small team, high impact), Storefront and New Verticals, but would really like to know more. Thanks again!

Here’s a framework one of my mentors shared with me about picking teams/jobs:

PPP framework: Evaluate any new opportunity using the below

    1. Priority to the company
    2. People in the team
    3. Project(s)

Give importance to all aspects in the order of 1>2>3

Most people consider all three of these but in an opposite 3 > 2 > 1

    • Great perspective. Many people (including myself) do tend to underestimate #1. I just wish I had enough information to evaluate these three factors respectively though. The problem is I don't have much information. Should probably have talked to more people beforehand.

    • Same question, what questions can help us understand the teams priority to the company, assuming directly asking #1 won’t work with the hiring managers.

Drive is made out of great people.
The leader at storefront is great too.

That said you have to prioritize things - if you look for impact and growth - they would slightly contradict wlb in some cases.
New verticals (depends which team) does ton of interesting things but some teams there are under some serious crunch.

At the end of the day - choose by people
A good manager and good team are honestly the most important thing. If you do well you’ll have tons of opportunity to grow.

Drive does not have a mature product lol.

Drive has the best WLb. On call is pretty easy.

    • Thanks for the insights! Haha I heard Drive (Drive Financial in particular) has some pretty infamous engineering quality i.e. some pretty bad bugs...

Regarding impact and wlb, any idea on Storefront, Dashmart and New Verticals? Thanks in advance :)
