Are people working in research labs evaluated only on the basis of how much of their research projects get tech transferred or get into products? Would like to know the evaluation criteria across different research groups in different companies?

  • Microsoft Research measures how many papers you publish in top conferences and journals. Pretty much like a university

Depends on your role. There’s an increasing amount of applied research teams here which build components to pass on to real engineering teams to build into products. They never publish.

Progress is evaluated by how well you convince other people you’re doing.

I worked in Intel Research for 9 years. It fluctuated between the two over the years, depending on the lab head and your manager. Opt for product intercept over paper publications if you want to climb the ladder in the company. If you want to get out and look good in the job market with your CV then opt for paper publication.

Here at Adobe it’s nearly identical to xHif38 post regarding Intel... at the end of the day though the company prefers product innovation over publication based on my experience

Of course it is different at different research labs and groups. Some are more applied than others. Some fare focused on integrating with products some are less. Some just look for publication, while others don’t care.
