Cambridge / Boston

Anyone from Cambridge here? Would love to have some information about living and working there. Like cost of live, opportunities (marketplace)... Trying to assert if moving from Seattle to Boston is a good idea or not.

Did you settle in Boston? How's it overall there compared to Seattle now that you have spent some good amount of time.

  • I live and work in Cambridge. Awesome place to live, so many companies and opportunities. Cost of living is a bit higher than Seattle but not too much.

Thank you GH101, do you have suggestion on the best place to live (for a family) with a reasonable budget?

    • Define reasonable? Looking to rent or own? Some parts of Somerville are more affordable than Cambridge but public transit is not as good. Parts of Boston aren't bad either but commuting to Cambridge can be tricky. Arlington and Belmont are cheaper than Cambridge and are fine especially if you plan to drive. Most families I know live out further from the city - if you live near a commuter rail stop, especially on a line that has a stop at Porter (where you can transfer to the red line), that can be a good compromise.

  • I tried to search for jobs in Boston, but they seem to be scarce and startup scene seemed to be poor, comparing to Seattle.
Am I missing the right job search tool for over there?

Kendall sq is in the middle of the red line, housing cost near Alewife station(one end of red line) is still higher than Seattle, don't consider the other end of the Red line. Somerville is cheaper but neighborhood might not so great, Medford is a little bit less crowded. Houses in Belmont are great but expensive though.
