Makes sense. Salaries were decided based on COL, so why not.
The less replaceable you are the less this is true.
The answer to “why not” is that they won’t be so quick to raise them when you move back
ZipCode as per IRS Tax Residency is probably best. ZipCode based on IP is too easy to spoof.
And then it's called fraud
Prove it
Ty
This is dumb. They’re already saving so much money on real estate teams, overhead costs, etc that they don’t need to cut employee salaries and completely kill what is left of productivity and morale. Come on guys, use your heads. This FUD is stupid
Well well well.

Well, he did provide a contribution. By sharing his emotions on how the table has turned. Good enough for me.
I actually think the market for devs will get tighter as a result of all this, resulting in faster acceleration to higher salaries.
Why would it get tighter?
Ship the same code while wfh = very valuable
Get VPN and change your address to Earthclass Mail.
Do you think 20% cut is reasonable? I was offered 20% cut, if I move to Texas
Damn.
20% isn’t that bad. Depending on zip cost of labor+cost of living is 25-50% there.
If it was my family business, that's what I would do. Which employer would want to overpay, especially as costs will increase.
How will costs increase if companies are able to reduce office space and real estate costs?
Just like your grocery prices are going up, cost of electricity, insurance, acquiring customers, keeping customers, having to support older products longer because customers don't want to pay for new festures, cost of raising capital, etc will creep up. Stagflation: inflation + no growth.
You get what you pay for
Back to the Bay Area then:)
A lot of workers are available on UpWork today that can be hired cheaply. Why are companies still paying half a million for great engineers? Answer: Because great engineers will go work for the highest bidder.
