Do any teams dev teams have a good WLB at Apple? All I hear, on blind, are horror stories of people working night and weekends.
All team dependent. My friends all work 10-5. I work 8-8 some days.
How many nights and weekends do you average? Do you do it to get ahead or because there are unreasonable deadlines?
The problem is meetings all day prevents you from getting deliverables done during business hours. I generally work an extra ten or fifteen hours a week most weeks.
Yes. I can understand you have to make the deadlines. Especially right before a product cycle but if you’re always working nights and weekends. What’s the point?
I have pretty solid WLB. Don’t believe everything you hear. It’s no different than any other large company. You will have to hustle around product releases deadlines. But that pretty normal for product centric companies. I’m essentially checking out now for the rest of the year. Week off for thanksgiving. Another 2 weeks of non productive work and then off until the New Years.
Can you share which orgs have good WLB?
My WLB is good. If it weren’t for the >1-hour commute each way, it would be great. Most managers I’m familiar with don’t want burned out employees, but won’t stop you from voluntarily putting in extra hours. Personally, my to-do list is never-ending, so if I know I’ll need to put in extra time to meet a goal or deadline (or increase my visibility), I’ll schedule extra work time around family obligations.
Good WLB or good bonus/refresher, you can pick one and only one at Apple
It is a battle, for sure. This is where a good manager helps.
I have rarely worked on weekends and on a normal to I am at work from 10 - 7 PM with perhaps some more emailing, etc later in the evening.
I’ve only worked once over the weekend in the past 2 years and received a $500 gift card from my director in recognition of my efforts. WLB is pretty good in JG’s org.
Who is JG?
This is good to know, thank you
Pretty good. My work hours are 10-6/6:30 everyday. No weekends.
Nah my wife works 80 hour weeks, which isn’t so bad. She used to work 100 when she worked at Goldman
🤯
80hrs isn’t bad …. what world are u on
