TC chase vs Important role

Nov 2, 2021 7 Comments

I head engineering and development areas and decide the product direction - an important role. However, I don’t get paid as much all these TCs that I see around. So, I was thinking should I be chasing TC after seeing all these TCs. I might get some engineering manager role at most, as it’s very difficult to get higher roles. But it won’t be as important as what I do, but would definitely make me rich. What would you do?

at 20 yoe you should be in the millions already, 275K is typical TC for 1 yoe or less, important roles do not feed your family, TC does. If a janitor job paying higher than my max career potential, I would jump on it

  • I'd continue doing what you do, and patiently wait for the right opportunity that looks up to you as a perfect fit for an important role, thus paying well.

Think of your current role as a longer term investment.

TC is usually a reflection of how important the role is to the company. We all tend to believe that we’re too important at our current roles but the feeling is never mutual. A good EM in a lot of companies have a say in the product direction and if you’re able to grow in the role if that sense works out.

While I wouldn’t recommend an aggressive TC chase, if you’re going to be paid 30+% over, you’re underpaid in your current role and should switch.
