Google offer generation method

Oct 13, 2017 37 Comments

I interviewed for Google and it seems that the results were good and they are moving to present the packet to hiring committee and then to vp and svp.

However, they never asked me about my current compensation or other offers I might have (I told them about possible offer from FB). What happens if they come up with a bad offer?

I am a senior software engineer at LinkedIn which translates to level 4. I think Google is shooting for level 5 but the thing is that my compensation is on the higher side of my band. I know that because after interviewing with FB last month, their e4 level offer was not matching my current comp so they had to ask me for another interview to shoot for level 5 there as well.

So what should I expect from a Google offer?

Just an update for people who read this later through search. I ended up getting an offer in level 5 after negotiating a bit with a 20% bump in salary. I will be joining Google soon.

  • Just a general advice (it might not work in all cases): 1. Don’t reveal your current comp first. See if they will offer you more than 30% of your current comp. 2. If they offer too low, use your current comp to negotiate for at least 20% above your current comp.

My company used to ask current pay and they even asked my pay stubs or w2. That was last year. This year I’m hiring and they told me they no longer ask for current pay info. Apparently some states have made it unlawful to ask that, so the company decided to not ask across the board.

    • They can’t ask you for your salary. It’s against the law now.

Question: in this phase, how the prospective employer verifies your existing RSU? Do you need to share all details or generally they just take what you told them and match them with your current level to validate?

From my experience, they just take your for it cause ultimately if you are honest and their offer is low, you should be willing to walk away from the offer.

I wouldn’t interview again at FB. At this point they’ve all the info they need and can make an educated decision.

You are not there yet. HC is the main hurdle you have to pass. Once that is done, they will ask you very comprehensively dont worry. Also you are likely to be offered at L4, its untremely unlikely that they hive you l5, given you are l4 at LI bc Google has been known to downlevel. If you are closer to L5, they will offer you L4, but the high band of L4. GL!

@Noobgler Thanks. So by the majority of the loop you mean the interviewers I assume. I hope that's the case. A friend of mine seemed to had a reject from the vp or svp though. He tried next year and got in. These steps are really complicated to me. I have been in HCs at LinkedIn and I am also an interviewer here and our pipeline is much simpler.

Yeah, i just got through the proceds, so mostly this is what i heard around. I guess if you only get 2/5 voted hire, the recruiter would just reject you or no manager would be interested in you bc HC usually doesnt approve that. So it means you get at least 3/5 positive feedback. So if you get 1 or 2 strong hire, chance is pretty good.
Yeah it honestly fucking sucks to get svp rejection. I think that is fairly rare, and your friend might have been borderline or whatever, you really never know.
