I noticed lately companies (not even 1st and 2nd tier) ask complex questions on the phone screening interviews! Did you notice that?

As an interviewer, I admittedly couldn't solve the problems I ask.

2004: "I'm going to throw you a curve ball here...how would you reverse a linked list?"

2021: "Givenย nย non-negative integers representing an elevation map..."

Answering how reverse a linked list in 2004 is probably tougher than all the Hard LCโ€™s now ?

Some exaggeration, but arguably tougher in terms of how narrow of a filter it would be. There was no algorithmic interview prep, it was questions like reversing a LL that you probably hadn't done manually since freshman year and if you could derive it on the spot that's a strong positive signal. Also less competition, esp from applicants around the world.

Did instacart where they asked 3 LC in one hour round. Cleared the interview and told recruiter I am not interested in the company anymore for that practice. I do not really mind doing LC questions but I donโ€™t like being evaluated on whether I can solve 1 LC hard and 2 mediums in one hour to evaluate my coding skills or technical competence when in the day to day work Iโ€™d be doing Machine Learning.

Having math intuition and memorizing equations are two absolutely different things. Remembering the details of back propagation and understanding what's behind the code are also two absolutely different things. Back propagation is just a way to calculate the gradient, period. You probably should remember what function it is a gradient of. Remember, Einstein failed Edison's interview, but Einstein had wonderful math intuition.

  • Basically it's like trying for the NBA by testing how many full court shots you can make out of 10 tries. It's somewhat related to the job, but also not really used at all in real situations.
