Why do Canadian and US salaries not match up in terms of COL?

Seattle and Vancouver/Toronto tend to have the same COL but TC in Seattle is way higher. Heck, TC in LCOL areas in the US is usually higher than Vancouver/Toronto. I've seen the same job paying $120k USD in Texas and $120k CAD in Toronto.

Is this the norm?

Unfortunately yes! Canada salaries in just numerical terms is 2 grades lower than in the US and add the currency depreciation, you’ll know why Canada loses talent!

  • 120k USD and 120K CAD doesn't seem that bad. Its the faang that are outliers.

400k+ offers is only possible among fangula. In Canada you have shopify that might pay similar and maybe instacart etc.

  • Canada has plenty of labor and few employers.
Companies don’t grow and earn as much in Canada than the US. Talent isn’t valued as much

Because that's now how capitalism works. Local markets dictate local prices. Too many engineers in Toronto and not enough jobs. Seattle has Amazon and Microsoft that have 100k eng positions amongst themselves. I don't think all of Canada has that kind of hiring power for SWE

Canadian cities have a large supply of engineers but fewer jobs.
