Which has more prestige: A CS PhD in Machine Learning from Berkeley or MIT? In other words, all things held equal, who would you prefer to hire/work with/invest in?

Aren’t your advisor and their field a lot more important for PhDs than prestige of the overall institute?

    • Yup, but I am still curious what the industry prestige/reputation of the two phd programs are. Prestige plays a bigger role than people admit in hiring or selecting for corporate fellowships.

Advisors will matter more for niche roles. If you’re doing a PhD it means you will likely be working in a niche job role and chances are everyone in that area will be familiar with the top researchers in the field. So which professor you came from matters most.

In fact, coming from a top professor from a non Ivy League university can look better than a subpar professor from an Ivy League university. This mainly applies to research oriented roles in the industry.
