Moving to NY with my Spouse from Dallas. My partner doesn’t have a work authorization currently so I’m the only person earning. Is it doable in NY with a 160k TC.
Planning to live in the Nassau County to avoid the NYC taxes (~3.7%) as I will be working remotely.

How much do you guys think I can save on a monthly basis if my paycheck is $7850 after taxes?

Yoe: 3y
Tc: 160k

Why would you move to NY if you are working remotely?

Except the housing, how much should I expect to spend on groceries, utilities etc. Here in dallas we eat at home 90% of the times and monthly grocery comes out to be $700-850

    • About $900-1000, that's the cost for me and my wife along with $2200 going towards rent and utilities. We typically eat out about once a week, not too fancy places though.

  • Are you planning to buy? Before you get sticker shock Nassau County property taxes are some of the highest in nation.

Just going to rent! Found a few 2bd 1bath apartments under $2500. Not planning to buy a house until we have 2 income sources

  • Depends on your lifestyle honestly, but IMHO on a modest lifestyle you should be able to save about $3-4k per month. If you really focus on saving may be you can stretch it to about $4.5k.
