Hi

I recently got an offer from Microsoft for a service engineering intern role. I am really glad to get the offer. However, I would like the options to switch role to be a software engineer as new grad. I did apply for swe internship roles but I got resume rejected from those. After this internship I will only have 1 semester left to graduate.

I was wondering, how difficult would it be to transfer to a different role (mostly a software engineering role) when I graduate? And what should I be doing to make sure I can do one smoothly, apart from leetcoding? Should I be reaching out to people I know at Microsoft (I have few friends and mentors working as swe in different teams), recruiters ?

Thanks

TC: intern so 🥜
Yoe: still in school

You have to wait about a year to interview for new jobs internally. Yes, you can move a little earlier, but it will be difficult as a new grad unless you have great networking skills and impress some people enough to give you interviews.

To be honest, switching roles can be difficult. If you have other options for the role you want, seriously consider those and get experience in that path. If you really want to work at Microsoft then start reapplying for Software Engineer roles in a year while you still have new grad status and you can apply for university jobs.

In that case, take the Microsoft internship and see what projects they have for you for your internship. Learn everything you can and do a great job. Talk to your manager about your goals of being a SWE and if the project doesn’t already have enough of this, see if you can showcase your SWE skills more. At the least you’ll have experience with an Internship at Microsoft and a team of people who have a really good experience with you and maybe some people willing to continue networking with you and helping you find opportunities. In the best case, maybe the team will have SWE opportunities and offer you something or Microsoft will offer you a SWE opportunity in another team.

If things don’t work out the way you want, most companies…I believe Microsoft and Google are both included…consider University candidates within 2 years from graduation. So you can apply to both University positions where your competition are University candidates and you can apply to the positions that are open to everyone.

Good luck with your path. FWIW, I worked at Microsoft for a long time and I enjoyed it.
