I joined Intel in March 2020 as a new grad. The work is going real slow. I’m a hardware (design verification) engineer right now. I was always good at programming and doing fun little software projects. I have a couple of android apps developed too. And after looking at all these SDE salaries, I just started to prepare for SDE roles. And immediately, I get a call for an Apple Hardware engineer (design verification) interview. Fuck me dead. I said yes because I don’t want to be at intel. It’s too slow and tedious. Nothing fun and challenging. I didn’t get the Apple offer yet - I know. But if I get it, how hard is it to move to SDE within the company by being a hardware design verification engineer? How many years should I work as a hardware engineer before initiating an internal move to be a sde? Can peeps at Apple or the ones in similar conditions help me out? Really looking for help. I want a good healthy working profile and not a slow environment. I don’t know how Apple is, though. Btw, the interview is today (Friday). Yoe: ~1 Hillsboro
Thanks. Any idea on how the internal transfer will be?
You can go to Apple for HW to help you get SWE interviews elsewhere.
Intel’s stock price doesn’t make sense when I these kinds of posts daily 😂😂
It's almost always best to get the position you want externally than to do an internal transfer. 1) internal candidates are interviewed just like anyone else so you have no inside track by getting your foot in the door 2) you now have to impress the new hiring manager and not piss off your existing manager who may stab you in the back 3) you will capture the latest market rate TC which will almost always be greater than the depreciated TC for existing employees. However, this may not apply for small startups where roles are mushy and politics doesn't exist yet. LC hard and get what you want now rather than typecasting yourself with even more DV on your resume
I agree with your point but it is going to take 4-6 months for me to be ready and be a part of a company that pays high. And in those 4-6 months, I’m going to mentally die with whatever the shit is happening here in my team. But at the end, your solution to try for sde directly makes a lot sense. No more typecasting. Thanks!
Take the role at Apple , transition internally
Any idea on that process? As in - how many months should I stick to my current role before I initiate the transfer move?
Don't go to Apple expecting to transfer internally. Read other posts on Blind about this.
As far as I know, internal transition at apple is non existent. The company works like a factory and u r just a part of its supply chain. Others can chime in too.
Thanks for that!
Internal transition is not easy at Apple from what I have heard. Take the Apple offer, if you get it and keep prepping for SW roles for an external switch.
Thanks! My interview on Friday went well. So let us say that I get the DV offer from Apple - will it look weird that I might switch in an year or less again for sde role? Currently, I only have 1 year exp at intel.
Good luck ! Many people move with much less than 1 year. Dont get stuck for the sake of hitting timelines, unless you need to stick around for a year to keep joining bonus or something like that
Transition within Apple is not gonna happen. Also finding time to leetcode and then move to SWE externally could be challenging. Workload can be high to be able to manage both. Take the TC hit now, leetcode hard and move to SWE if that’s your end goal. If you want to do some good work in hardware, Apple is your choice.
Hello, I am researching to prep for DV interviews. How was your interview experience and what questions were asked?

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Run as far away as possible from DV. Leetcode hard and apply for software roles.

What’s wrong with DV? Seems like an interesting field, but I’ve no experience with it, so just wondering. Edit: Or is this just in the context of “SWE v. HWE”, and within HWE DV is fine?
