Want to move to US

Hi Folks, I am currently L5 at Amazon India and want to move to US. My team and manager are good in India and I am doubtful if I can find another good team and manager in Seattle. Its very rare finding a good manager at Amazon. I am a very hardworking kind a person and MA mostly but won't be able to handle the pressure of Dev list/ PIP in a foreign country if i happen to land in a bad team/ manager. Is it possible to get an H1B directly for MS/FB/Google/Apple where i dont have to fear getting piped? Any referrals are welcomed. YOE: 4 TC: 55k #workvisa #h1b #rfe #faang

Don't worry about team, unless you have a US degree you won't get an H1B anyway

You are better off in India if you are not married or your spouse is not working in tech wrt to TC.

I see folks getting 200k to 300k with 5 YOE is this not enough??

You won't be getting any joining stocks for location transfer.

Amazon Dutrer Apr 28, 2021

You can't. Move to Google, MSFT India and take internal transfer

Amazon don’t have internal transfers?

Amazon Dutrer Apr 28, 2021

It has. But this guy fears pip and wants to join other companies. So this is the only way

I suggest below steps (assuming you are in Amazon 1+ yr) 1. Move to US on L1 visa 2. As soon as you move, apply for Green Card. 3. Amazon will file for H1-B 4. Luckily, you got selected in H1-B lottery (and visa approved) then by that time you would have your i-140 approved (i.e., recieved priority date for your GC). With this, (with current rule in place) your H1-B will keep on extending till you get your GC. 5. With H1-B you can move to either google, fb, etc. Downside: 1. Initial salary while moving may be potentially low — system decides that based on your current rating. Manager does not have any control. 2. If you work hard then you may potentially get promoted in 2yrs. If not at least get Exceeds in rating which will pump your salary. Savings in US (even with initially low paygrade) will be anytime higher compared to your Indian salary. Assuming you move at 170-180k (incl. stocks) — inhand salary ~$9.5-10k Expenses ~$2200 per month rent ~$1000 per month utility, car installment and additional expenses ~$2000 per month living cost (food, etc.) Based on your standard of living you may end up saving ~$4.5-5k Which will be much higher than your monthly income in India.

So correct me if I’m wrong: If you move to the US with L1B, get your H1B picked and have filed for the green card (say, EB2) then you can switch jobs easily? The company files for EB2 or H1B? Do you file these on your own?

So 5k*12*74 is about 44L. How is that a good saving compared to India? One could save almost that much with ~70L salary at 5YOE in India, very normal.

Amazon gCUh12 Apr 28, 2021

I did the same. Got an H1B in one year luckily. Now choosing between offers. Find an apt team, assuming you won’t get an h1b and you’ll be fine.

McKesson nomad_99 Apr 28, 2021

Don't come - the green card backlog is KRAZZZZZYYYY for India born

VMware dare_devil Apr 28, 2021

that only matters for ppl who want to settle in US, not for people just looking advance their careers and make hellof a lot more money, ready to move back to India anytime

H1b is very tough from India unless you go for a non-profit company where there is no h1b yearly quota. H1b opens only once in a year and without US advance degree the probability of selection in lottery would be in 20-30%. L1 visa would tie your hands, you would not be able to change employer and have to stick with Amazon. My suggestion is to seek PR of Canada. Then work there and in 4 years so, you can apply for citizenship. Then you can easily move to US on TN visa. But keep in mind that having Canadian citizenship won’t reduce decades of wait time for US residency. However, worst case you would have fallback option of Canada.
