Was I low balled?

Jun 16, 2018 19 Comments

Just out of masters and joined Apple as a SWE. Base/rsu/sign-on is 120k/50k over 4 yrs/10k. After talking to a few of my friends (who works at FB), I feel like I got low balled. So am I actually low balled or is this about right for a masters new grad?

Edit: TC clarification

  • Welcome to Apple. Now you have bought yourself some more time to do leetcode and to interview with other companies. Don’t wait.

Just cos you have a masters doesn't mean shit. You will get the same offer as an under grad unless you had prior internships with FANG.

I would strongly suggest you not to compare with other friends or companies. It’s your first job and at a very prestigious company. So what if you are low balled? If you are good, Apple and your team will increase your total comp to retain you, otherwise Apple can’t blame you for losing a great talent. So, it’s really your first year that you will be “losing” a bit of money. Now, go show them you are under paid.

First, don't compare yourself with your friends at FB unless you're also at FB or similar tier company; it's not gonna end well. Apple comp doesn't really compete with it.

Otherwise, yes, I think your offer is subpar, especially for a Masters new grad in Cupertino. I don't know what are the ranges for Apple nowadays, but this is a starting salary I would expect someone to get from a tech company in Seattle.

EDIT: Of course this is assuming you meant 50k RSU total. If it's per year, it's pretty good and you can ignore my comment.

  • Base is extremely good. I know people with 3 years experience have similar or $130k base. Rsu is less as you could have got $100k+ with 1 year experience

Not sure what you mean by 50 RSU...per year? $50k per year? If the latter no idea why you’d feel that’s a low ball for someone with no experience.

Looks good to me as a fresh grad salary. Three things to consider. First, Facebook is a Tier 1 company, don’t compare your comp with their engineers. Its not a fair comparison. Second, having a Masters doesn’t mean shit unfortunately. Check the min requirements of the job. Does it really need Masters or are you just filling in a simple university hire position and happen to have Masters? Third, did you have competing offers? Was anyone of them better than Apple’s offer? There is a good chance Apple would match other offers.
