Blind keeps advertising to me about careers in finance so maybe people are curious about this. What do you want to know? Edit, adding some answers from below: * Hedge fund was Two Sigma (TS) * It easier to have impact at TS that is noticed, but less people to learn from. At G impact is harder, lots of super experts to learn from. So there are pro’s and con’s both ways. * TC $700k+ at both. Started with a TC drop at G but refreshers stacking brought it in line. Exact numbers depend on how you count but this ballpark probably helps most people * In general would say pay is similar at both places
What hedge fund? Location? Old and new TC with yoe
Two Sigma, NYC, will/did answer other questions in other comments
Has anyone quit working at a quant to trade full time on their own?
Yes but it rarely works out great
No one cares unless TC
TC $700k+ at both. Started with a drop in comp at G but refreshers stacking brought it in line
Where do you learn more? Which place is more challenging? Which pays better?
Great question about learning band challenges, answered in new comment below. I’d say both pay similar but I suspect it’s easier to get higher paid at quant hedge fund over G, partially because it’s easier to have a big impact at a small company than a big company.
What type of work did you do at the hedge fund? Did skulls transfer to G well? Edit: did skills transfer? What was difficult and what was easy in the transition?
What languages did you guys use for production/live code?
Java mainly and some C/C++ for the trading system code
YOE?
~15 YoE
How best could I prep to jump from Amazon to a finance firm like this?
Also any good firms to apply to? (Besides the usual JS / Citadel / 2sig)
HRT, better than 2S, and great culture. Jump is another one. Akuna, DRW, IMC are good too. Five Rings is pretty solid but they hardly seem to have openings. Virtu is a player too but have heard negative reviews regarding wlb. Oh yeah, PDT (Process Driven Trading) has a great reputation too.

Why would you go to a giant to work on shit when you could be changing the game?
Good question. It was easier to have impact at smaller place , but at some point I stopped learning things and also had to deal with lots of personalities and org complexity. At G impact is harder, but the people that know their shit know way more than at the hedge fund. So there are pro’s and con’s both ways.
