Has anyone had any experience negotiating with Google? I emailed the recruiter emailed me an email detailing the competing offer, but was not accepted - they want offer letter instead.

Can people share what their experiences are negotiating with G?

TIA!!

Said I wanted x, they said y, I said no way, they said y+more, I said y+more+small, they said okay. Several phone conversations and days in between negotiation.

They didn't require proof to negotiate?

What proof would they need? I didn't have counter offers, I just wasn't going to accept their offer.

    This is what I did-
Ask the recruiter for a range. I didn't budge until they told me their range for the role and this was after three of four calls of "I need either candidate expectation or competing offer"
Then she told me normally 210-220 up to 260-270 so I finally gave her my competing Amazon offer for 265. I made the mistake of also saying "I would be happy with 265" because she kept negging me with "we can't always match or exceed competing offer"

Came back with 265 (273 with verbal accept)

I negotiated successfully without any competing offers. I waited until they gave me a formal offer letter then responded a few days letter via email explaining why I think my experience and expertise was worth x more equity. They said they couldn’t pay that but offered more than the first offer. I said it still wasn’t enough and asked for a bit more, they said no and recruiter said they were maxed out at that point so I accepted.

That being said, if you already told them the numbers of your competing offer I think you’ll need a completely different strategy. Why not just ask the company to give you a formal offer letter and then send that to your recruiter? They’ll likely match it or increase their initial offer and you can negotiate from there.

Used MSFT offer to make them budge a bit.

Initially they gave me about 180k TC, she already had my msft offer and I asked for more , she came back with 230(MsFT was giving an out of level offer 215K in Seattle for year 1) but I took Google because on average Google was giving much more and the refreshers are better. Negotiated twice.
