What are your favorite weekend getaway places assuming departure around Friday afternoon and coming back on Sunday night?

Let’s consider both driving and flying approaches. I hope to get more original answers beyond Lake Tahoe or Monterey, with the optimization constraint of not wasting too much energy traveling. (e.g. flying to Mexico City)

  • Driving to Santa Monica. Might be far for some people, but it is a great experience. The drive down the coast past Gaviota is beautiful too.

      I'd recommend allocating more than a weekend for getting to/from LA if you want to enjoy it

    • You get almost the whole weekend. Leave the Bay at 5pm, hardest part is the Bay Area traffic but that clears up before Prunedale. Arrive in Santa Monica around midnight.

      Leave at 6pm on Sunday night and be home around midnight.

    Timber Cove hotel in Sonoma on Hwy 1. Really fun atmosphere/vibe, very relaxing digs. Terrifying drive though.

    Mendocino is nice and super cozy. As is Booneville if you want a shorter drive.

    Mammoth is outstanding for amazing summer alpine hikes in the Central Sierra.

    Monterey is getting nicer. Lots to do down there. Refuge spa is amazing.

    Palm Springs is fun if you plan ahead.
