I received offers for both L6(manager) position 14 YOE. Basically identical offers money wise. WeWork 250/475 (3 years) Compass 250/580 (4 years) My question really is which company has the better outlook from a career perspective? I know lots of negative feedback about wework on blind. I see kind of neutral feedback on compass. My main concern is how I can leverage either company in the future for either career growth internally or externally. I know there are questions in regards of how much a tech company either one of them is but they invest in tech regardless. So which one is the better career move?
The second value is the equity. I know rumors are that wework ipos in Sept so that equity could potentially be liquid sooner than later. Compass has said in 2 years.
How does the equity in each offer compare. We Company will IPO soon.
So as stated above it's very close in equity 580/4 for compass and 475/3 wework. Wework would be marginally more equity. My main concern really is quality of the companies.
IMO, even besides the larger equity and sooner liquidity, Wework seems more exciting. Being part of the SoftBank family of investments there are all kinds of exciting synergies that could develop...
Theres a lot of speculation with wework rn due to the CEO selling off a crap ton of his shares pre-IPO. This does not necessarily correlate to him thinking the IPO won’t be successful but it does raise some concern as to whether he has confidence his remaining equity will be valued higher than the most recent private valuation
If you look deeper into it, he sold a bunch of his shares, and also borrowed against a lot more of his shares, to buy commercial real estate and lease it back to the Wework... I think it could also be seen as him truly believing in the value Wework provides to property owners
Does your 250 include a bonus?
No bonus for both
Yikes. Then TC seems low for someone with your YOE. What city?
If you have done your research (i.e, read any article about the founder CEO) & are ok with the chaos you saw and experienced during your interviews, you should have a good idea of what you are getting in to.
250K base is insane. Congrats.. YoE? Compass has better reputation.
What business do you feel more passionate about? Compass or WeWork
Thats what I am struggling with. Both are so similar to me.
Wework is moving into a great "tech hq" soon in Chelsea. It is pretty chill working for wework I can say that much. They are really trying to rebrand as a tech company so they are working hard to keep people happy. It does seem a bit disorganized at times but that is getting better.
Do you work in engineering side of WeWork? What's the work life balance look like?
Yeah I work in engineering. Work life balance is great. Come and go as you please just get your shit taken care of.
Compass is probably a better place for engineering than WeWork. Neither really has much to offer in terms of value added from tech, but at least Compass is trying. I have no idea how software will ever be a significant part of WeWorks end goal. Both are long shots but I guess most startups, even with billions in valuation, are these days.
I am not familiar with compass engineering but am curious to learn more about why it’s better than Wework?
We're trying to make products that directly compete with Zillow, Redfin, Streeteasy, as well as some productivity tools that are a little unique to the firm. But building an inventory platform is relatively interesting work. I guess I'm just completely ignorant of what WeWork is trying to do with software. Is it mostly just an app to coordinate scheduling meeting rooms or is there some higher aspiration? I don't mean to suggest that the engineering talent is better at one firm or an other. I have no idea and it wouldn't surprise me if WeWork attracts better talent. But the Compass product and vison seem to be more technically interesting. Executing on that vision is another story

Is it okay to wear a T-shirt to the office?
Are those numbers accounting for equity? If so, take their equity offer and cut it half and that will be a more realistic valuation of your comp.
