What after google+Facebook

May 5, 2018 69 Comments

Spent my entire career in Google and Facebook. Made to E6. Wondering what’s next. Currently making ~700k TC working ~50 hours a week. Don’t want to sacrifice either comp or life.

Where would you go?

It was intentionally past tense because he was indicating that startup life was easy and paid a lot

Lol HotBlonde has obviously never owned a startup before. Very draining, stressful, and rarely rewarding (9/10 startups fail)

You're only halfway done with the acronym. Come to Netflix!

Yes, it means more than anyone else would pay you, specifically, for comparable work. You're encouraged to go out and do your own market research (I.e. get offers) to help your manager gauge that.

Hmm, right. This is certainly true when we are talking comp for engineers in the range of $300k-500k. Not in the staff engineer range. This is based on my own exp and the offer that nflx has been giving to folks around me.

Honestly, what you are asking for is impossible. No one besides F/B will pay someone in a non stressful role $700K. That’s why so many people never leave F/B.

Booking does NOT pay alot and you need to move to Amsterdam. If you want to move to Europe, good choice though

Is your mortgage paid off and such? If so, why not join a Series A start-up? It's not as risky as a new startup and it's still early stage. You probably know a lot of quality people by now having worked in G+FB. So you might have good leads into promising startups.

At most well funded ones the risk/reward ratio might not even justify making the move when OP is already well established and making $700k/year.

There are 1 or 2 startups in a year where everything lines up: timing, market, tech, team, investors, etc. If you are G+FB alumnus these should be within reach. Of course, the risk is never out of the picture, but you'd have the rewards too.
