What am I doing wrong?

I talked to 1 of my old coworkers today that we worked together 3 years ago and found out that he's making $200k+bonus @ Warner Bros in a non-tech sector. When we worked together we were making the same exact $ because we both were consulting and doing the same exact job. He's younger than me and much much less experienced than me in all areas. I'm now in tech as a TPM and barely making half of his TC. Everyone who has seen my resume has been impressed but I don't know what I should do and where I should look for a high paying job. What am I doing wrong that I'm not making the same $$$? I'm genuinely confused and concerned. Please help. Thank you. Edit: Location is LA

I hear you. I really wanna know. Hope this is not a simple gender gap cuz I honestly feel similar things when compared with my young male colleagues

Happens to me. My girlfriend earns 2.5x my current TC 🤔🤔.

Interview at FAANG, match your title to your experience not your job code

18+..but I started in business ops from Admin and worked my way up and around different departments and now that I'm in Tech you would think it would be helpful because most people in Tech don't have any of these backgrounds and on ALL projects I'm the only one who understands the bus op side and takes over the project. So idk why I'm not valued and paid for that extensive knowledge !!!!????!!!

The way people make money in tech is by company hopping. If you get a job in in a tech company coming from a non tech company your pay won’t be good. If you stay there for good, your pay remains crappy. Each hop brings you around ~20% bump!

Leave LA!

Don't want to code. I know that's the only way to make TC though 😉

Some places don’t pay much for certain jobs. That could be one factor which is easy to fix by changing a place. Another thing is being among equals is harder to progress. Going to a place where you’re above your peers may solve this issue. Otherwise there’s infinite number of reasons why you suck at career progression

Hulu CgDlJ64709 OP Oct 17, 2019

Agree and agree. Finding places that pay good are hard.

E*Trade cbEV72 Oct 17, 2019

It’s difficult only if you have a lot of constraints. If pay is important, you can start with relaxing constraints such as geography, industry, role etc. For instance I don’t want to move or become a coder, and thus severely limits my options.

Toxic to compare across to another coworker because there’s never enough information. Learn how to negotiate into a job. Get a job that pays better if the pay is the thing you choose to focus on. No two people are skilled or stacked the same.

Hulu CgDlJ64709 OP Oct 18, 2019

Agree but at the same time sometimes you know you are more skilled than someone else

Yup - that’s when you get a new deal and leave. At least for me. I’ve heard some people get a sudden bonus once bosses learn about an attempt to leave, but it has to be backed with a real offer on paper.

Difference is selling yourself with greater value. I consider myself as a valuable product and make sure interviewers know and understand the value that I would bring in. Many people are more focused on having the ability, but do not attach value to their abilities.

Hulu CgDlJ64709 OP Oct 18, 2019

Very true. I guess I never looked at it that way and I was always doing the latter and not the above
