What are companies that don’t have whiteboard or app critique in their on-site?

Hi guys, I’m getting tired of preparing for the design interview process and wondering if there are good companies that don’t require candidates to have to do these extra “tests” during the interview process. It feels like studying for SAT (not sure if they truly provide signals that someone is a good designer IMO).

I have heard apple. Are there others?

The whiteboard and the app critique, in my opinion, is one of the easiest parts of the interview process. You don’t even need to prepare for it, it’s just a conversation you have about a product, and you rely on your existing product design sense.

An app critique is basically giving visual, interaction, and product feedback to an existing product. A whiteboard exercise basically tests your creative range. You either have these skills or you don’t.

Fair points!! I appreciate your thoughtful reply. That is definitely true —where there are limitations to your projects and it may be unclear one’s own individual contribution. I personally like to show my creative range by showing a range of explorations I considered first, if the end solution was a bit constrained.

That’s crazy the audacity of your former design teammate!! But also unsurprising I’m sure it happens all the time.

I imagine at your yeo these exercises are the easiest pieces. Perhaps I just need to practice the format :) . I am definitely more comfortable talking about my past work and past experiences because I don’t like the pressure of time constraints.

Check out the Solving Product Design Exercises book, I found it super helpful. And practice definitely helps :)

I just finished Stripe's loop as well and had one, maybe they skipped if you're very senior?

Square does. Did a virtual onsite in December. Though it seems they always ask the same question that you can find if you search for it.

I didn't have whiteboard or app critique when interviewing Uber, but I had 2 verbal jam on some hypothetical questions
