I’m working at NASA outside of DC and considering looking for a higher paying job (I make 85K in the suburbs) while my wife goes to school. What are the companies to look for in DC? I did two internships at Google so I do have some industry experience.
If you are in blind and making only 85k, you must be doing internship while in kindergarten:) just joking . You deserve better
Are you a new grad? Years of experience? Software engineer?
Software engineer and some data science, degree in math with a bunch of CS courses, i started full time in 2014 with five years as an intern at NASA and Google
A bunch of smaller companies in the area should be able to give you $120k or more; for significantly more, consider hourly contracting or the few opportunities that FB, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have in the area. For MS and Amazon, the roles tend to be more consultant like than traditional engineering, so you’ll need solid people/relationship management skills too.
Whoa, is NASA comp that terrible?
Washington DC is mainly govt contracting. To make over $120k you need to specialize in something and become a SME in that area. You'll make more money with the one off consulting companies versus working for a Lockheed, GD, etc.
Another data point: I was making a more than that as a generalist working in Northern Virginia.
yeah man, look for contracting companies or consultant jobs. They'll pay the most in this area. A higher clearance will also get you more money.
I am a contractor (on site, private). Is my contracting company just screwing me over? I asked for a 10% raise... their response was to skip my annual performance review so there wasn’t a reason to give it to me.
They might be. What are your years of experience and job? What city do you work in?
Product/Service Sales > consultant > contractor... Unless you find a specialized contractor or have your own.
The President post with the Government of USA at DC is pretty high paying, with great perks.
Pro tip: Remove your graduation year from your resume if you graduated after you started working full time. Also, don’t be afraid to negotiate.

Internships at Google, working at NASA, and only getting $85k? That don't seem right. Negotiate hard for your next job.
