I live in Chicago and am strongly considering moving to Brooklyn. Does anyone have any recommendations for great startups in NYC?
Brooklyn? Why?!
I visited recently and really enjoyed it. That said, I’m open to suggestions. I really just want to be in walking distance to a nice grocery store and gym.
Lots of ppl like and live in bk
Airbnb is in NYC
Affirm is in NYC
Us, better mortgage. Soon to be unicorn probably.
What's great about better mortgage? Any interesting engineering problems and projects?
They’ve greatly reduced the cost to originate a mortgage with automation. There’s a lot of opportunity to improve the industry, it’s very complex. The core of the platform is a workflow engine for borrowers and various processors, the mechanics of it are quite interesting. Lots of room for user experience improvements because it’s a very important and complicated purchase for borrowers. They’re also trying to expand into all segments of the housing market piece by piece as it makes sense. I also think the core engineering team has really good people, but with 3x growth intended within the year it’s changing very rapidly.
Not a start up but Etsy is based in Brooklyn
Idk about start ups, but Google NY office is pretty great
Can you explain more about why? Curious FB NYer
Oh idk how it compares to Fb, but the location is really good, it's nice having like 10 different cafeterias across the two buildings, and there's loads of opportunity for transfers and 20% projects with there being so many teams working here
Nine Nine
Datadog isn't exactly a startup, but it's a great company and still has a lot of room for growth.
What makes you say it's great? Would you recommend working there over more established companies like FB or Google for a new grad?
I just have a lot of confidence in the market and opportunity in that space. I used it at a previous job for monitoring everything, and I interviewed there myself. Experience has been very positive. The product and the team is solid, and they already IPO'd so they are not going anywhere anytime soon. If the pay is on par with fb, and you have an offer, I'd say go for datadog.
Squarespace! DM me if interested ;)
Squarespace is a startup?
A large one I guess. It is still a private company
What is your degree, level, experience?
Liberal Arts degree, 7 YOE, and Senior Manager —I manage a team of BI developers and Data Scientists at a 200 person startup—I started from an entry-level role so my TC is fairly low: 112k base + 10% annual bonus
Opposite to other people who started as seniors?
