There are layoff rumors flying around at work and it’s clear that there are warning signs that something big is about to happen. If you have ever experienced a layoff what are some of the warning signs that tell you that winter is here
Lots of VP meetings, lots of middle managers meeting off to the side. I've been on the managerial side, and there is a lot of prep work and discussion amongst those in the know.
Winter is here.
Former Fiber employee here. Pretty hard to tell tbh, you can try stalking calendars of senior folks to see what's up
How many staff members at Google still work on the fiber side? They still have network engineers working on their projects?
Check calendars of the upper management- if they are all of a sudden taking long vacays, smth is up. I just lived through multiple rounds - if there's talk, there's reason. No clear direction from upper management, no HR announcements like Volunteering day or along those lines, people are leaving (accounting and hr dpts). The signs will all be there.
Accounting and HR departments leave first? Like they know company not doing well? What's the lack of direction? Like they no longer engage with your work?
In my case, my VP said to me "tomorrow is the big day, don't worry our team is safe" . And it sure was, a pretty shitty day.
You knew it was coming before then? How did you know?
Well I knew something had to happen when the company didn't meet our numbers (that we set ourselves) then there was a week when all the executed flew into our NY office but we're meeting on a different floor. So that was when I knew they they were planning the layoffs. Who was actually gonna go.
Well, in our case VP said we are all safe and he was gone within 2 days. Yeah, shitty times. Even if you get spared, seeing your friends and team gone is agonizing.
Upper management lock themselves in a conference rooms for a few meetings back to back. Followed by director <> manager meetings. Once that happens you got about 1 - 7 days before the layoffs happen
Ouch
By winter, are you referring to layoffs or regulations? From the title, i thought you were referring to the information article on regulation on tech
At a previous company it was pretty obvious when we didn't meet our target for series c that bad things were coming. Another time I've seen it was when customer base started dropping off. I think it just depends on your company and being a bit aware of the political weather.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
