The end of Backdoor Roth?!
I have been a UXD at Amazon for 4 years. Promoted twice. Recruiters started reaching out about job opportunities at Hulu, FB, REI, Qualtrics, Slack, MS, Smartsheet and Stripe. Which of these companies show an upward progression and which ones show stagnation?
Hulu, FB, Qualtrics, maybe MS, maybe SmartSheet, definitely Stripe. Assess the team, and get a good sense of the work you’ll be doing. What team are you on at Amazon and what level? And what do you most want to do with your time?
I am at AWS. L6, lead role. Lots of ownership and scope here. Kind of hard to beat that sometimes at other companies! I would like to continue to have impact and scope. Just need a change of culture at this point, looking for more collaborative and positive folks around me.
Kinda asking the wrong question imo. Which of those roles offers more challenge and career growth than the others? Company is great to get your foot in the door, but after I read that company name on your resume my next question is 'and what did you do there?''
They are all Senior / lead level IC roles.
It’s nothing at all to do with company names and everything to do with the role
Lol clear career progression. Dude just focus on actually learning and becoming a better version of yourself. People are not as concerned with company names as you imply. What shows clear career progression is if the person is knowledgeable and speaks with experience and maturity. I’ve bounced around from Amazon, to start ups, to FB, Apple, back to start ups, etc. It doesn’t matter. Just take the job that sounds interesting for you.
This is the correct answer. No one gives a f about the company. You still have to pass interview. Focus on learning.
How is Apple tc and wlb
Hulu and REI might feel like a step back. But can also be spun the right way.
The role is what matters. Friend climbed up to senior within a few years by going FAANG -> Uber -> Startup and his TC is way more than anything FAANG would offer.
Thanks everyone for replying! Just want to make sure my move does not look like a step down and I get to grow and work with great talent! I agree that the right role might be a better approach here. I am looking into Senior IC roles. Would not be much different from my current lead role at AWS. Truly appreciate everyone’s opinion! Cheers!
Any FAANG is upward. Stripe, Slack, Hulu, etc can all be considered upward depending on how you sell it. Is that REI the retailer? Going to retail feels downward to me, unless it’s Albertsons.
Also worth noting any pre-IPO startup is upward, until it isn’t. The sell there is that if the company succeeds, you were part of its success.
