Ideally, Sr Swe is a team lead responsibility and it is a major role. Some companies like Paypal have inflated Sr Swe title, and others have quite the opposite. So what companies have right leveling for Sr Swe title? Edit: Levels fyi are not correct either. Edit: Tech Industry levels are - + Intern (student) + SWE (beginner) + SWE 2 (independent) + Sr SWE (lead at Team) + Principle/ Staff SWE (lead at sub-org) + Sr Principle/ Staff SWE (lead at org) + Technical Fellow/ Partner/ Distinguished Eng (company wide)
From what I can tell Senior (~L/E5) at places that follow Goog/Fb's leveling system is less about being a leader and more about being trusted to work and solve problems independently. The next level above that Staff (~L/E6) seems to be where being a leader truly comes into play. Hence why those levels are much tougher to get to.
Why is your interpretation of levels the correct one? Senior just means being able to work independently IMO
Nope. That's SDE2.
Unless the company or team is small, lead tends to be a title reserved for principal or staff level. Senior tends to be still too junior for a lead on big teams with material impacts on the company revenue.
At Wework leads are below seniors 😂
imo Amazon seniors are quite good, I'd say 80+% of the ones I interact with are appropriately levelled
