I’m a SWE IC3 even though I have 8 YOE and have been considered a senior and lead for years within startups/agencies. It doesn’t bother me because it’s my first corporate job at apple of all places and leaves more room for upward momentum and raises. Question is with my experience and apple On the resume, should going back for my degree still be a concern from a pragmatic perspective. I’m in the Austin area so Google, oracle, meta, ibm are all options and I’m just weighing my best options. My focus is heavy web development and cloud architecture so the idea of 4 more years of computer science principles sounds miserable but if it’s still a trending need in this field i would consider it.
following 😅. i have similar situation. well I only have 3 yoe doing web dev and master’s in economics. wondering if CS degree will help with the career.
My perspectives it helps us think differently and understand CS principles but there are alternatives for those who are self disciplined which I’m assuming most people who can break into the field are. I’ve gotten a ton of experience in architecture, cloud solutions and the such from industry experience. Now im supplementing my lack of knowledge around algorithms with leetcode. I’ll never reverse a linked list, find a trees tilt or anything of the such but knowing how to has improved my way of approaching other problems. Buuuut if a degree did change my odds of moving around or up, I’d do it just to have it I guess
Bro you work at Apple. Wtf?
That surprising without a degree? I’m not working on IOS or anything crazy but on a cool team with high impact
Wouldn't do this if you already have a SWE title at FAANG... You could do an online masters if you really wanted. I personally don't consider degrees whatsoever when interviewing people
That’s nice to hear as I’m interested in Google. I’m at a point where if 8-10 yeo doesn’t speak for me then well shit
It doesn’t matter unless you plan to quit and try for a different side of tech from your experience. Your current company clearly doesn’t care. New companies looking at you for the skillset you’ve built won’t care. At this point for you, degrees matter more for jobs in education and research.
Encouraging to hear. I feel the same. I plan to make a lifetime career of web and mobile development so i feel niched. If I wanted to change my vertical I’d prob pursue on the side for several years before pursuing work in it
Things that will make you a stronger candidate for a new role or new company are a good portfolio of work/projects and certifications/training as appropriate. If you can continue to present yourself as a strong developer and show that you’re also looking at the tech world and continuing to keep current, then you should be good. You want to keep yourself as someone others will see as a valuable asset.
You have 8 years of experience. If you're not making a "career" change, don't bother. Goto seminars. Read books. They'll be more helpful.
You didn’t tell us what degree you have now.
