Serious question. I’ve seen them in sprint planning meetings but they rarely contribute and I have no idea what they do other than that.
They’re quiet cuz they’re finding a way to take all the credits
Have you felt there was a need for them to speak up or was there a question for them that they didn't answer?
No. They just sit there and look at random things on the internet I’ve noticed. I’m not complaining I do the same thing. I was just Curious what their actual job was.
Chill out and rake in the big bucks
They write documents that account for business objectives, customer needs, and technical capabilities/limitations. They are, in a way, generalists. The best manage to balance a lot of competing interests and keep scope and roadmaps under control so teams can deliver brilliance. It’s a hard fucking job when done right.
If they did all of that, what the hell would I do as an SDM? Give me that PM, would make my job easy.
That’s the idea
They reinvent stuff for no reason other than saying they designed X system.

Varies a lot depending on team. Good ones should be writing business requirements for new features, developing long term roadmaps, presenting business cases to leadership to get more funding, etc.. they really shouldn’t need to be involved much in tech implementation, unless your team is struggling to deliver shit (which sounds like is probably not the case).
Thanks for clarifying this. Yeah we are doing fine hitting all our goals. I just see the PM once every two weeks and sometimes they do no even come to our sprint planning meetings.
