As a consultant most of my job involves traveling, but what I often find I have free time at nights. I already use hotel gyms and I hate just sitting and watching TV in the room. I also dislike reading books for an extended period of time or just surfing my phone. What do you do when you know no one (besides your team) in a random city when you’re caught up with work?
If I stay on the weekends I try to visit the city and the surroundings. My weeks are quite busy so it is hard to do anything. But we also organise some team events like going to the restaurant and sometimes it gets more exotic. We went once to do some paintball and we went for bowling as well
Depended where I was and how busy I was. I was lucky enough to travel internationally a lot earlier in my career and you can bet I was out on the town at nice restaurants, interesting sights, etc. when I was in anywhere remotely interesting. On the flip side, I also traveled to middle of nowhere US, Canada, you name it. On those trips, would catch up on work, study for CPA / GMAT, go to the gym or whatever it took to kill the time. Sometimes this was very enjoyable, other times couldn’t wait to get home

I definitely take every opportunity I can to go sight seeing in the city either at night or over the weekend if possible. Even if I'm with no one else, the thought that I'm in a place I may never visit again drives me to seek out interesting sights. Wandering out and about myself also gives me time to reflect and organize my thoughts for the day.

A few thoughts here: 1 - Spend as much time as you can tolerate with your team outside of working hours. Building a genuine personal relationship will help you be more successful on the current project and also come to mind for future staffing opportunities. A lot of those people can turn into life long friends and strengthen your professional network (if you are ever looking for a new job or trying to sell work). 2 - Training - If you are building a model at work spend some extra time learning some new functions or take an online training on Power BI. Some of the folks I have seen be the most successful at the firm work to learn above and beyond what is required on the project. 3 - Catching up with friends and family on the phone. You can stay in touch with people and free up your weekend to be active.
Thanks! I like the last one in particular
