Is this a bad move? Or a good one? I got an offer for about 100k and don't have competing offers yet. I really like the people that I interviewed with but am afraid that this might not be a good job to start my career. Do people move from IBM to FAANG or will there be good future opportunities beyond IBM?
What division?
What is wrong with you? IBM is a great company to have on your resume. Don't chase an acronym dude. You do you, and be happy.
Anyone can move to FAANG from anywhere, I started my career as an auditor (accountant) at a Big 4 consulting firm before I got into tech. The biggest thing is how much drive you have to push yourself; non-coincidentally, that drive will be helpful for your career regardless of where you work. Also, congrats on the job offer!
IBM might not be a sexy name you can brag about to your friends but its a big company and will absolutely not hold you back in your career in any way, unless you stick around too long.
Would Playboy be more sexy? Seriously do you think having a company like Playboy on your resume hurts your brand going forward?
Oh yeah , Oracle is so sexy on your resume lol what a bs
Congrats on the job offer!! I agree with the comment above - you should have no problem moving to FAANG. I worked for 5 years at a "3 man" start up. Got offers from FAANG! They don't really care where you came from. Just solve those damn leetcode problems 😂 Goodluck!!
Bad. Accept and keep interviewing. Renege if you have too. IBM ain't worth shit.
The same could be said of Microsoft
Also reneging is a shitty move. Much better to ask to postpone the deadline to make a decision than to accept and renege.
It's fine, I started at AT&T and passed Google HC after a yr. Get some experience and prep LC.
You’re absolutely fucked and can’t go anywhere from there what a horrible choice OMG!!!11q There are so many companies worse than one with a name literally every techboi recognizes that you could start a career at. Don’t worry about it. Just take location into consideration, cause depending where you’ll be, 100k may not be as much as it seems.
Northrop Grumman is probably worse tbh
Dude/tte! I was a civil engineer before. Now in Product Management at Amazon. One of my peers was a butcher!!! I hired a young PM who was an artist, and then an assistant to an executive. Modern companies realize that intelligence and critical thinking are a far more valuable skill sets than where you worked before/what you officially learnt. Can you communicate effectively? Are you (generally) right most times given time to think? Are you always curious? Do you have an unrelenting urge to grow and challenge yourself? Can you collaborate? If the answers are yes, take the job. Your life is in front of you. Unless criminal, your past decisions are not a blocker for career prospects

Congrats on the offer! IBM is a very well known company, and you will learn a lot there. You can easily transition to FANG or any company after, as long as you Leetcode. If you don’t get any better offers, you should definitely take it.
For the amount of shit posting and negativity that occurs on Blind, I'm impressed by how supportive and encouraging the people are on this thread. Almost feels like reddit. Keep it up!
I think people shit post on TC contests and such but give good answers for the most part
