Some people think it is great if both a man and a woman earn say $50K for the same job. But if you go to a different company and the woman earns $150K and the man $185K for this same job, the woman is still better off. So make sure the pay gap, such as it is, is not resolved by depressing salaries.

It's rather incredible that this 77 cents "on average" number gets repeated without question. After adjusting for job family and hours worked, the gap is between 3-5%. That percentage could be for a variety of reasons - one of which is discrimination, but also due to women being less disagreeable and less aggressive negotiators. Until we can get past empty virtue signaling and having an objective debate on the gap, this whole idea is useless.
