First question: what does Best Buy actually do? Been receiving a couple solicitations a week for a Product Owner job at Best Buy, and haven’t engaged because tbh I’m not entirely certain what Best Buy does anymore, let alone what a (software) Product Owner would do/projects...I would assume maybe they’re focused on eCommerce and fighting to stay relevant in an Amazon world? Second question: If you work at Best Buy in the Product/Dev org, do you love or hate it? Why? Edit: Ok, so clarification: I know what Best Buy is and what its purpose in life is (retail). I’d like some genuinely solid insight into the corporate Product Org. And compensation listed in the solicitations is $90/hr, contract.
They sell the things that you buy.
Have you ever heard of bestbuy.com?
Lol, obviously
They sell consumer electronics, and I guess they hire software pm for their website, or backend it. I don't know of they have an app. I actually like the magnolia sound and audio centers in best buy, and at least that specific area they seem to have knowledgeable folks. Oh and I did get my washer drier from them and get sundry electronics from time to time.
Thanks!!
I’ve interviewed a couple designers from Best Buy and they were both working on software that assists their geek squad service team members. I.e. internal tool.
Interesting! Thanks!
Best Buy is a good organization. The product org generally works alongside engineering teams to produce both external (e.g. bestbuy.com) and internal (tools) apps. The work that you're doing will depend on which team you get to work with. There are other Product Owners that you'll be able to interface with at the BBY campus. Work-life balance is very good (as is true for many Minnesota companies; as you also tagged Optum), with most folks putting in no more than 40/week, except during Black Friday.
Super helpful, thank you!!
No problem. Are you based in Minnesota? You also tagged Optum. They have some very interesting products that they're working on right now and a strong engineering organization. I think you'll enjoy either company in the product space.
