What does the process & timeline of moving from US to Canada to get a Canadian PR and then back for a US GC look like?

So, I've got just one more chance left for my H1B lottery. If it doesn't get picked up, I'm going to have to leave the US.

I wanted to know what the process & then the overall timeline of moving to Canada, getting a Canadian PR and then applying for a GC directly or GC via TN visa looks like.

This is basically my contingency plan. I will be applying for Canadian PR. Based on my scores & my background, I feel like it might be accepted under the Skilled Worker express entry program. I don't mind slugging it out in Canada for a few years & then coming back to the US on a TN visa or GC.

Has anyone gone through this process? What does it look like? #workvisa #h1b #TN #Canada #GC

  • With the current express entry scenario one possible timeline is this.
    - Ask Amazon you send you to Vancouver office under on work permit. Normal procedure.
    - apply for PR after you gain 1 year work experience there. CEC
    - after getting a PR, wait for approximate 5 years to get citizenship. Timeline includes meeting requirements and application processing time.
    - move to US on TN visa.

Other option would be to come back to US on L-1 after 1 year instead of applying for PR.

+1, OP please spend a few days researching this stuff. Also, please avoid getting info only off Blind, and especially not off Reddit or Desi Facebook forums, there's a lot of noise on there.

Look for employment based permanent residency options for Indians in Canada and the US, and try to get post-2020 articles. A lot has changed in the past 1-2 years, mainly due to processing delays and slowdowns.

EE has not taken candidates in over a year, so that route is closed as of now. You being from India or US won't make a difference. If you read more on the topic you will find how pointless it is to think of Canada as a backup.

    • I am Indian working in India. I applied for EE and got ITA under PNP. I have been closing following the updates. EE will resume sometime after July. I got PNP from Ontario, atleast in Ontario software engineers has a special stream altogether. Search for OINP tech draw. Good luck.

Another point, you can't convert from TN to GC. Check Google, there are ton of articles.

We got into one of the last open Express entry draws (non-PNP, also called FSW). No movement on processing for almost 1.5 years. This was around Dec 2020.

Most people who applied in March-April 2020 are starting to get processed now.

Even for PNP, it's almost a year waiting, but yeah it's better. CEC is the only one which is moving in a reasonably tracked way from what I know.

Canada is basically not a reasonable "quick" backup like before now, unless your employer sends you there.
