I mean, everyone says fancy jargon about this and that risk analysis, enterprise architecture, I love the people I worn with, sometimes I work with the CTO, or anything else. But seeming as it's a collection of helping companies build or update their systems, it comes off as a ton of diagrams particular to whatever project the company needs. Is it more than just diagrams and analysis? Or is it really that boring?
A friend of mine said that people that do IT Consulting are usually the ones that cant work in a real IT Department.
Other way around.
think "IT consulting" is probably pretty broad...I have been doing cloud ERP consulting the past few years (formerly SAP work and now Oracle)...agree with mtech7 it can be somewhat unfulfilling at times, but I guess that also depends on what you're implementing/consulting on. essentially my gigs have been learning the ins and outs of the system & helping companies to implement it.
Some of my gigs have been evaluating the way a company is using a product and helping them fine tune it for their exact needs. As well as looking at their over all workflow and process and putting together options software and process to help make that more efficient, ie script out repeatable processes ect.. Just depends on the area of expertise the "consulting" is done.
I did it for two years. It seemed that boring to me so I quit and got into a programmer role which I seem to be enjoying a lot more. I was with an Indian based IT company and they didn't seem like they had their stuff together. They don't seem to have a good reputation either so it could just be the company. Edit: I worked in the functional side of things so it didn't require very much skill. Seemed like anyone could do that job. You just had to know how to work around the system. Very unfulfilling work.
