Recently back from my MBA internship. Company low balled me with an APM return offer. I'm qualified for a PM role with my MBA from a top 25 b-school and 7 YoE reaching a tech consultant level pre-MBA. I'm planning on accepting their offer and looking around for a better offer until I graduate next year. What would happen if I accept their offer and keep looking for a better offer and eventually not join this company if I get a better offer/role? (TC hasn't been declared to me as yet)
Nothing happens. Worst case is you work at another company and the company you interned at blacklists you. Best case is you use a competing offer to renegotiate a PM role offer
Thanks for that input. Have you come across something similar?
Hm, top 25 business school might not be your biggest selling point. You can accept and rescind later-it’s your choice but not a professional one.
Well I agree it isn't professional. However, it is unprofessional of the company to squeeze me knowing my work experience, education, and performance during the internship.
Sounds like they don’t value your work product very much
Lots of M7 MBAs get APM as well, at companies with two levels of APM. It's just not obvious because they don't put the 'A' on LinkedIn. Imo TC and responsibility level matters more. If you get a fast promo out of APM then literally nobody would ever know if you don't want them to. If the initial internship is from OCR your school might be able to fine you 10k or something. Check the career office policies. You might also be banned from alum resources.
Nops, it wasn't OCR, although will check policies.
I know a lot of people who do this. At the end of the day a company will do what’s best for itself not for you and I think we should all be empowered to do what we feel is best for us. Doing so may burn bridges with the company that you left but most likely won’t affect you elsewhere. Also at will employment is another consideration so never feel trapped
My apologies for my lack of knowledge here, what does at will employment imply? Either employee or employer can terminate the contract at will?
In California and a lot of other states that is the case.

TC in Both companies please
I have a verbal offer from one company where my hiring manager and HR have committed to me that I'll get an official offer. They will give me an APM role, which I'm absolutely not interested in. As I mentioned above, I don't have an idea of the TC. There isn't another company in the equation yet. I'm planning to accept this offer and keep hunting for another company even if that means I have to settle for a lower TC as long as I get PM or Sr. PM.
Never agree to anything without it in writing. Words mean nothing unless you can prove it
