Most companies will pay some severance. It might even be spelled out in your contract or employment agreement.
In the US, however, most people are considered “at will” and you can be fired at any time, for any reason or no reason at all. Same way you can walk out any time if you want.
They will usually pay severance to keep a good employment reputation in the same way that you would usually give notice - to keep a good employee reputation.
