What is Product Operations?

I have been reached out about a Product Operations Manager role at Uber. What is the exact responsibilities of a product ops manager and is this position a good transition to being a PM?

Don't know anything about this role but operations usually means managing the day to day running of a business, dealing with unexpected issues, etc. Doesn't necessarily sound like a great way into product unless you'd be working really closely with PMs

Quite opposite. Most transitions to Product Management are from Product Ops. POps is the bridge between operations teams and the product team so they work with the customer day to day, monitor success metrics closely and help with feature rollouts and triaging issues. Perfect stepping stone to product management and I personally know of quite a few POps who are now very successful PMs.

This role is usually in charge of managing the technical & operational partner relationships—basically the link between PM/engineering (R&D) and tech support, sales, account managers, etc (operations stuff). This means you’d basically influence the product direction/prioritization, to make sure it lines up with what the operations teams need to be successful. (At least this is my understanding, from my experiences working with POMs)

If I am from a non-technical ops position right now, would this be a good step to eventually transition to a product manager position?

Yeah; it definitely is, especially if it’s an internal transfer!

Yes, definitely a good stepping stone.
