Had a recruiter reach out to me about a UX Research position at Amazon in Seattle. Anyone work in UX at Amazon? I've had 4 UX Research roles over the last few years, each company was completely different. Looking to hear what its like at Amazon before pursuing the position.
UX research is not a well defined discipline in Amazon in my experience. Most teams have UX designers doing research work. Plenty of opportunity if you’re up for it though.
Amazon has just over 100 UX researchers, compared to a design force of about 2000. Researchers are not necessarily seen as the huge value they are until after they’re put on a team. And then everyone wants their time and efforts. So...yeah, we need a lot more, and I think there’s finally a broader recognition of how valuable great researchers are.
Have you ever seen Amazon's UI? Don't do it homie.
I know it’s not your question, but could you tell me what ux research is like at IBM?
Everyone wants UX research done, but there aren't enough researchers to go around. When the researchers have free time no one knows what to do first or how to incorporate research into the sprint cycle on short notice. On top of that, they recently restructured half of the design researchers in the company into a centralized team and are still trying to figure out what to prioritize and what the team structure is. At the moment it's all very loosey goosey and people are prioritizing their own projects.
