Levels.fyi shows a 240-360 range for Seattle for past months, that's sde2 range for new hires in Amazon in recent months.

What is a real TC target I should fish for?

Hired a few months ago at L5 in Seattle. Was first offered $250k, which was well below expectations. Eventually got it to $350k. I see people on Blind saying they're getting $400k+ which makes me think maybe I just suck at negotiations. I also didn't get any competing offers.

It was still a good bump from my Amazon pay and I was happy to bail from Amazon regardless, so I took it.

Not telling a number first is what everyone recommends doing on the negotiation. And then they offer 250, was it easy to reason with the recruiter without a competing offer?

Yeah I thought the same, but IMO not making sure it started out high screwed me.

The main leverage I had was leaning on my current position at Amazon thus not being desperate, so I leverage that as much as I could. If I were to do it again I would have given $450k as a "make me move" number then let them negotiate down.

It's tough because I do this maybe every five years, but they probably do it a few times a week.

You can get 325-375 if you negotiate well. Focus on RSUs- hard to bump up base and bonus is fixed.

  • You can likely get high 300s, low 400s with a competing offer
