What is causing companies to hire so much?

Are companies growing or are employees playing musical chairs?
With the fed looking at increasing interest rates, does anyone else see an economic slowdown and recession? Not sure how stock market will look.

Am I missing something here?

I lost one to Google and hired one from Google. Lost another one to Netflix and hired a replacement from Uber.

    Musical chairs at cliff.

Covid policies intentionally created a further global class divide. More money at the top to pay for talent.

Take a look at net employees per year and you’ll see how we’ve actually grown, not just musical chairs. I think we were +20k in 2021 alone. New hires minus attrit.

There is so much pressure on growth and to grow generally you need humans doing the growth work and scaling. We have enough money to keep hiring, most top companies do now

Did see headcount increase so it's not just attrition. Cause of growth demand? Digitization?

Labor shortage as people above 55+ decided to retire from pandemic, and as inflow of immigrants stopped.

Inflow of foreign workers has not stopped that much though. I mean plenty of student visas and work visas being issued

  • Definitely growth, but musical chairs in the top third. No one is going anywhere I haven’t heard of, and every role gets backfilled. Biggest change I see is folks in the middle tier. Much easier to make a jump for money and title, but I’m seeing folks pull it off that are really not ready do it. I think some pain is on the way, at least in work, from inflated titles and comp. My 2c.
