What roles pay the highest in India, given similar experience? Also, from my understanding, India values MBA more than MS. Is it better to do an MBA and then return to India (but that would be so much debt)?
What do you mean by India values MBA more? As a country? Opportunities wise, you’re much better off as a Software Engineer if you have a strong skill set.
Better opportunity for those with mba degrees. They get paid higher, is what I guessed. IIM, ISB, FMS - graduates from good mba schools in India take up managerial positions and get paid higher. They also don't always need to be on top of the game (like LC for engineering positions or ML for data scientists), so moving around is easier. Correct me if I am wrong.
I have friends who’ve graduated from IIMs and earn way lesser than software engineers at Uber, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Amazon, Google etc. To earn top salaries as an MBA grad is harder than earning top salaries as a SWE. For instance - many companies offered 30+ base for new grad SWE in India. Unless you’re top 5% of the class in IIMs you won’t get that base in India. But of course, if you’re an average SWE, you’d earn much lesser.

May be you should move back first then decide ( I am in the same boat) doing an MBA from US and moving back to India is not a good move IMHO ...because the cost is too high and you won't get an equivalent benefit in India ... Plus Tech has some good salaries too ...I second the opinion that techies/tech managers in Amazon, Google Flipkart would be making more (at least similar) to other IIM ISB folks
Where are you pursuing your MBA from, is it part time? If I move back first, I may not be able to leverage something that's good here. It doesn't hurt to plan or at least think about the alternatives. Completing another education from US would mean staying back another year or two to pay off debt.
I meant I am in the same boat in terms of moving back to India. I am clear that I am not doing an MBA (atleast in the US) ...I feel that I would have enough money and more money would not make things better...but that's just me
What is your goal? 9-5 job? More flexibility?
SWE skills are more valuable than MBA. A colleuge of mine joined as Program Manager L5 with 3 YoE and MBA from FMS. I would take 2-3 years to get promoted from L4 to L5. Also, tech salaries are generally higher and non tech ones, for same level
Insightful. What classifies as a tech role - software engineer, data scientist/analytics, ML scientist? And the non tech roles would mean program manager, product managers, business development? Is that correct?
Amazon has a classification - PTM vs PM( program manager) PM(product manager) vs PMT In Amazon tech roles get a higher salary However doing an MBA does not bar you from tech roles if you have a tech background
Software Engineering but in an India-based product company, having no clients in a ridiculous time zone. Looking at the laid-back culture of working here in US, Indian engineers are working 2x for one-fifth of the salary, that too adjusting to US time zone for meetings.
Is that universal? I see a lot of FB, Amazon, and apple folks here as well working long hours, people are constantly worried about increasingly high bars of interviews, a fear of being laid off, and constant visa issues (if that applies). Given all that, can't say about you but I am super middle class in the US. The point about time zone meetings is definitely true. I am not sure about the other points. India also comes with the perks of labor affordability which gives me back some time, unlike here where I plan my meals everyday or eat out which ain't healthy or financially-wise.
Software engineer and get a job building the next generation of signaling software for the Navy of India. The weapons systems of navy airforce and army need to be integrated.
