I've googled it but just can't understand the difference, are they the same thing.l? Please can anyone elaborate.
I think it’s the opposite of what the above comment states. PTO is usually due to something unexpected and you need a day or a few days to resolve. I had a death in the family and I took a couple of PTO days (obviously unexpected) to be with family and attend the funeral.
I literally said PTO is smaller chunks like what you said... :P
Sorry, you did. But the rest is pretty accurate.
I think also different companies treat this differently. Like maybe you are allowed X days of each, or one requires more notice.
I took 3 days off for bonding with my Roomba when we first bright it home. That isn't a vacation, that's PTO.
Usually vacations are PTO, but not all time off are vacations, like sick days but they still fall under paid time off. I think every one is complicating this. For the OP, they are the same.
In many states Vacation is a paid benefit that counts as a wage (meaning it cannot “reset”), while PTO is more general and can include sick leave, holidays, or vacation.
Vacation is a type of PTO.
Another difference is that unused vacation days are usually paid to you when you leave the company. But not all unused PTOs are paid when you leave (e.g. sick days). Also the policies for carrying vacation days and other forms of PTO days over from one year to the next might be different.
PTO: vacation and sick leave combined Vacation: sick leave accounted for separately
A lot of these answers make no sense. PTO stands for “paid time off”. Your company may further categorize this into personal and sick time. The word vacation is general and refers to extended period of time spent relaxing or having fun, usually within the context of taking a longer trip. Sometimes people refer to their usage of PTO as ‘vacation time’... it’s just slang. If you’re referring to some sort of paid leave, just say PTO or paid leave; it you’re allowed to take time off but aren’t being paid for it, it’s unpaid leave.
You are reading into the meaning. Telling folks that one is taking a vacation day is in common usage.
I’m not saying it’s not common usage at all? By categorizing it as slang I am quite literally explicitly stating it’s a term in common usage. The reason I explain it to the OP in painful detail is because *they* are confused about and overthinking the terminology and I am breaking it down to provide *them* with clarification.

Best LCOL or MCOL city?
PTO is usually taken in smaller chunks (1wk vacations, days off). Vacation usually scheduled longer (2-4 weeks). PTO more likely to be approved, basically
*studies show that longer vacations being the norm benefits productivity
2-4 weeks vacation? Are you from USSR? This is America, folks rarely take vacations over 2 weeks
