Missing "do want"
Startups vs Big tech. Startups use to pay more in base salary than I could get from big tech, and cash income was more important for my own speculations and covering obligations and lifestyle. The tc from big tech would basically equal my startup base salaries. Now big tech pays a bit more in base salary and the tc is 2x to 3x more. So its been a fun ride but startups and mid size companies just aren’t in the game right now, there needs to be more capital and more wage growth to compete.
Can't agree enough. I was an exec at a very successful startup (one that found market fit, very profitable), left to join faang in another state as a basic manager and tc is 2.5x what I was making back home (and I was making top of the market as that startup exec back in home state) I did analysis on equity, and would come out even with faang assuming best case for startup growth and no promotion in faang over a four more years The issue is like you said, founders have to give up either more equity to hedge the risk or fork over more cash from VC in salary to compete.

Some startup companies want only FAANGs 😉 😉
Worked at 4 startups. All went from 0 to 100M+ valuation and died. Statistically a bad idea- unless you’re a startup consultant 😉
Caveat- the risk/reward flips to making a lot of sense when you own 70% of a thing that has 10% chance of being worth 100M. Still risky but.. believable upside.
...Or unless you hold significant equity

I can earn more in a largish place while dealing with the same amount of drama

A million times this.
without enough comp to make it worth it
