What is the process like from H1B -> Greencard, are you locked to one company?

I’ve tried reading up on it, but there are many steps and hard to find an estimated time frame, so just trying to understand the length it takes from the start of the application until the end, and how long you are committed to a company.

I’ve also seen posts about expedited process vs regular, and not sure for what steps that would apply, and what timeline it affects.

Any insight would be very appreciated!

  • Once I-140 is approved and I-485 is pending for over 180 day, you can port your I-140 to another company, in the same or similar position (your PERM is associated with a SOC). Search for AC21 or portability rule for more.

      Thanks. I was just curious, I have no publications & much less with 100+ citations.

      I was more worried if this is a new loophole the backlogged folks are going to exploit to make things worse for other backlogged folks.

      Wow. That’s exceptionally fast. I heard some companies expedite, others don’t, not sure on which step(s) are expedited, but do you know the length for a “regular” application?
