What is the reason behind Microsoft’s recent growth?

In Blind people seem to always prefer FANG over Microsoft due to perks/TC, etc... However, for example in the cloud market somehow GCP’s growth and market share is still behind Azure, I wonder why? How can Microsoft get away from spending less and still out grew google/fb?

Enterprises are still reliant on Microsoft products. They’ve been using Office and Windows for decades, so when Microsoft is like “hey, try out our cloud!”, these enterprises dip their toes. And once you shift enterprise in into Azure, how easy do you think it is to move out? Not easy at all, when you consider some of these organizations are highly regulated (like drug companies and hospitals).

Something like 350 million people on Active Directory, so lots of organizations tied to Microsoft in some way.

The native AD integration with Azure is so much easier than trying to manage IAM roles/users/etc in AWS.

FANG is about pay, not about size. These companies pay a lot more than Microsoft, despite the fact that Microsoft is still a powerhouse in the tech and research industry. Microsoft does better with business, though they aren't as good at the consumer side.

Fang was about historical investment returns, not pay, nor size.

Powerhouse in tech and research? Hmm. Interesting. I thought Golden Days of microsoft are long gone.

These existing enterprise relationships are so incredibly important. Unless GCP has some major breakthrough that shows extreme need by enterprises to use their cloud over the existing incumbent, why would an organization switch? Also, Microsoft just had to be at the table. They are doing so much to ensure that open source developers are embraced in azure that at least at the CIO level there not a scenario where “we can’t do x in azure cloud”. So it really has to be ground breaking technology for GCP to gain market share.

I have been at FANGs and I am very happy at Microsoft - there are many factors why someone would like Microsoft - its the culture change that has a huge part to play. Do you know microsoft Silicon Valley has free food too - that too very good food. ( for those who care about free food)

Microsoft rvmaestro May 28, 2018

+1 Microsoft Silicon Valley here as well. Got other FANG offers but MS was the best. Free quality food, stock discounts as stocks rise, and great work life balance are also awesome. Also looking forward to the new campus. Might keep me around longer.

Does compensation at MS keep up with FANG in the long run (say when you stay more than 4 years)? How are the refreshers?

Azure and Linkedin are the reasons

Well, specifically: Office 365 - just like Google counts their business suite with cloud offerings, so too does Microsoft. Their number will always grow naturally with too much excess spend as companies mitigate Exchange, Sharepoint, Storage, AD, Lync and other costs in lieu of cloud products plus included office. The enterprise 0365 comes with dozens of extra value-add apps to entice. While many FANG youngsters or Mac users wouldn’t get it; it really is appealing to Corporations with large Windows desktop counts. Not to mention deals you can get on o365 or Azure to sweeten the pot even more. It’s not as hard of a sell as you may think.

Microsoft Anitadick May 28, 2018

Office 365 has been a gateway to Azure growth in customers. If we are running your collaboration why not your business apps transformed into the cloud. We prefer not to lift and shift your VMs like AWS.

Google is catching up in the cloud space. Apart from the data and AI story, their cloud is rubbish.

Microsoft Rowdy r May 28, 2018

How are they catching up! Microsoft gained 4 basis points last year while google only gained 2? They are an AI juggernaut though and if I had to bet on anyone of them to come up w a differentiator I think it is google.

Microsoft psike May 28, 2018

I meant trying to catch up, they were late to the game. Their strategy is data&ai plus loss-making discounts to win deals.

Enterprises works on only one thing : Trust. They can't/don't trust G/F because of the bad reputation they have in consumer space. I remember reading a news article about two students from Berkeley suing G for reading their emails (paid version of gmail!). Microsoft worked hard and built that trust for long time. And about pay, G/F etc relies on very few products (to be specific modules in their products) to generate revenues and sustain. So they'll go to whatever extent to retain important people or hire someone if they feel that guy is the right one. Microsoft on the other hand is very diverse in terms of product portfolio (it's actually like a collection of multiple multi - billion dollar companies). So, is not that desperate.
