What kind of windows laptop you get for working in Amazon?

Starting next month and got to pick a laptop now. As an all time Apple hater, never have I ever owned an Apple device so I want to avoid it like a plague. But IT is being too vague on those Windows devices. I am looking to get a Dell ultra wide that can do 90w usb pd over type-c. Does anyone know exactly what model they are distributing to employees? Listing only 13.3", 14", 15.6" doesn't really help. I personally have an XPS 15 and this sucker draws more than 90w on full load, so maybe not a good idea to go 15.6". 13.3" only has 256gb of hdd which really sucks...but what the heck is 14"? And there are 2 options 256/512gb wtf... A surface pro? Tried googling it only got heavy duty PC and chrome book from Dell. Neither do others from Lenovo seem to be good choice. Can I just ask HR or IT? Feel like I will have to explain how I become an Apple hater if I try to push them on this matter... Btw forget about asking the team...they have MBPs

What's awesome in Mac OS? Asking genuinely. Was a Linux user earlier, never used Mac.

Amazon f*ckbjp Jan 18, 2021

I had an HP laptop and it was sh*t. Get a mac.

Amazon cdh2228 Jan 18, 2021

I have a HP laptop and it is okay which makes it about 1000x times better than anything Apple has ever produced.

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

Ok if it's HP then I should really avoid it. Based on screen size I thought they could be Dell latitude lineup

Amazon crackhead Jan 18, 2021

Get a Mac. I never used Mac before joining Amazon, but got used to it in a month. dev at Amazon is Linux heavy, and Mac is a way to go. Also, you'll get top of the line Mac, but not top of the line windows.

Amazon ddjid Jan 18, 2021

Same experience here. Went from windows PC for life to MAC after joining Amazon

You guys know that windows now supports linux subsystem right?

Amazon Bhajan Jan 18, 2021

Amazon provides shit windows laptops, the kind non tech employees get. I'm no apple fanboy but don't choose a Windows laptop for work.

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

Yeah everyone I asked said this but they don't know what the exact model is..

Why do you hate Apple ?

Amazon cdh2228 Jan 18, 2021

Because they fuck over their customers every chance they get. Because they never produce anything innovative, they just copy someone else. Because they're a marketing company, not tech firm. Because their user interfaces suck. ....

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

They are a life style company that sell stupidly expensive hardware with no expandability. However not really any of these is a concern if I'm not paying for it...so may consider it for now After all, no way to change the fact those MBPs are already bought by Amazon

You don't have Ubuntu on XPS? There is an XPS which is developer edition comes with Ubuntu out of box https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/overview/cp/linuxsystems

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

No I game on it. Will convert my old gaming PC to Linux home server after I manage to grab that 3080 for building a new one

Amazon frupiduser Jan 18, 2021

As an all time apple hater myself I can tell you - the windows laptop they give might not be sexy looking but it is really good. I've rarely had it hang, the display is good for work (most of us anyway use monitors). Since I got a laptop which was 2 years old at the time, I wasnt a fan of the battery life but I do last 5-6 hours at max brightness. Also based on job family you can also ask for some upgrades - I got a 16 gb upgrade with a bigger screen

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

My biggest concern is its support for thunderbolt 3 and power delivery over single cable and should draw less than 90w. Are all of these features supported?

Tech Company Hardware: Apple = SWE + DS first pick. Highest quality machines for the highest paid folks Windows = Non Tech pick. You won’t get the best and the Mac will be better cuz Tech budget >>> Non Tech

Intel bobgoose OP Jan 18, 2021

That's what I am afraid of. Everyone I know working in amazon is in tech and none of which has a windows...no demand on windows pc I doubt IT will bother upgrading them

If you’re in a tech team, pls use the Apple products. Adapt if you have to, the machines will definitely be much better and peer support is more accessible...

Just get a mac, I prefer windows too but 99% of your time will be spent in browser or terminal, so you can ignore all the BS mac OS comes bundled with.
