Hey folks, currently L6 at Google India. TC: 2 cr ( 75 fixed, 15 variable, rest gsu)( tc $270k in usd) Yoe: 17 I am talking to another company for sr director role. Wondering what is the minimum TC I should aim for.(publicly traded, no paper money) Google has several advantages including excellent wlb, great perks, awesome brand, options to move around teams, potential exit options later on, and full tc liquidity ( stocks vests monthly). On the other hand, the new place will be hectic but the scope will be much higher. I will be leading a big team (~50 folks) as opposed to being ic at G. Also for future options, if I need to show people management skills, it's going to be hard at Google since team sizes etc are pretty small. What should be my walk away TC target ?#tech #google #indiasalary Please comment as well
2.75 to 3.5 cr. If you tell the business sector they are operating at , I can provide more details! And what is the size of the team that you are expecting to handle there?
Ecommerce. ~50 folks
Flipkart do you know tc range for sd/vp at flipkart ?
How long have you been at Google? Is it common for L6 at Google to earn 2cr or are you an exception?
3 yrs. Yes i think it's common for L6. Mine is slightly over 2.
@google what is the minimum no of experience you need for L6 manager role ? Is L6 possible at 12 yrs of experience?
You should be targeting on an average 30-35% increase on your current numbers if you don't have any competing offers and 50% otherwise. The Sr. Director role with an org size of 50 in a publicly traded firm is well into Google L7 territory which sets you up to boomerang back a couple of years down the line if you wish to or may be grow into a VP and explore Director level roles at FAANG or Microsoft (L67).
Yes, that's true from scope perspective. Also it's slightly easier to return to Google as compared to first time.
OP aren't you sceptical about managing a team of 50 all of a sudden?
I had managed a team of 10 at microsoft in the past
Big mistake going from IC to managing 50 member team. Frontline People manager is a completely different role. Manager of manager is yet another completely different role. Are u confident you can excel in that role? I was a top IC and moved to management, took me several years to course correct and become a average manager.
If being manager was not aligning with your interest then why didnt you switch back to IC role in which you were very good?
It was perfectly aligning with my interest, thats what i wanted to do long term, but i wasnt good at it from day 1. Most ICs arent. u have to learn management.
What is exit options mean ?

For publicly traded companies ( real RSU ) Google is the best option in India in terms of WLB and brand. I can’t think of better brand and WLB option. There will be many unicorn 🦄 startup willing to hire you as head / VP and pay you ton of 💰 but most of it will be paper stocks
It's a publicly traded firm, so real money. They haven't come back with an offer though, but I want to have my walkaway tc before negotiating
I meant anything publicly traded is not going to provide better WLB and brand than Google. If TC is the priority then definitely there are options with Coinbase, Uber and few others that can pay 💰 insane
